The Iconic Wellington Cable Car
The cable car has been transporting people up and down the steep hill above Wellington Harbour for over 110 years and is an important link for locals and those attending Victoria University's Kelburn Campus.
It has also been a tourist attraction and at the top of the list as one of the must dos on a visit to Wellington, in fact no trip to Wellington is complete without a ride on the cable car!
All you need is 20 minutes to enjoy a return trip with about five minutes at the lookout to admire the view over Wellington and its magnificent harbour Te Whanganui a Tara (Great Harbour of Tara).
Ideally spend a little longer at the top to admire the view and take in some of the history at the Cable Car Museum (free entry). The museum is situated within the old winding house and is home to two of the original cable cars and the historic winding gear once used to haul the cars up the steep hill.
This activity is perfect for taking the children you look after as an Au Pair- children under 5 are free! It is a fantastic and iconic experience that can be made in to an excellent day trip- with a visit to the cable car museum which is free of entry, a look under the stars at Carter Observatory, or even a stroll through the Botanical Gardens on a sunny Wellington day. At the Cable Car station off Lambton Quay, there is a great range of eateries, such as Subway, St Pierres Sushi, the new Cafe, Funiclar and many more.
